Montrose Times is planning to become Houston's only weekly LGBT community newspaper.  Our inaugural edition is planned for Houston Pride Week 2009.

We are going to be a true community newspaper run entirely by volunteers and open to anyone who wants to contribute content.

Anyone who can be verified as a member of any LGBT community group is eligible to be a “Guest Writer” and will be allowed to post and publish any content they wish. Just email the editor after you have opened an account and after verification your status will be upgraded.

After you have become a "Guest Writer" you can be upgraded to editor if you would like to take over a "channel". Editors are expected to do their best to contribute at least one article per week.  Editors also pick the weekly online "feature article" as well as the weekly content for their "channel" in the printed version.

We really could use some people that are familiar with Drupal and Prose Point as these the the applications used to run the website.

The following “Channels” need editors and/or writers:

  • This Week – is a weekly and daily listings of community events. This channel needs an editor, writers and contributors. This channel is open to all local business and non-profits who want to keep the community informed of their upcoming events. We hope they will maintain this channel themselves.

  • Community – will be a collection of articles related to the local LGBT community. This channel needs an editor, writers and contributors.

  • Politics – from the left of course. Anyone associated with the Democratic Party, Stonewall Democrats and the Green party is encouraged to take over this channel but it will be open to anyone. Right now we do not have anyone who has volunteered for this channel. We need an editor, writers and contributors.

  • Religion –This channel is open to all the gay friendly religious organizations and anyone else that would like to contribute content. Right now we do not have anyone who has volunteered for this channel. This channel needs an editor, writers and contributors.

  • Lifestyle – fashion, culture, food, and fun. This channel needs an editor, writers and contributors.

  • Movies – Movie reviews and news. We would like everyone to submit as may movie reviews as possible. We have an editor for this channel but we need writers and contributors.

  • Travel – We have a great travel writer and editor for this channel but it will be open to all who want to contribute content.

  • Bars/Clubs – We hope the local gay bars will contribute content for this channel but it is open to all who want to contribute content.

  • Restaurants – Restaurant reviews. We hope that everyone will contribute content to this channel. We have an editor for this channel but need writers and contributors.

All contributed content will be published on the website. The editors for each channel will pick the weekly content to be used in the print version as well as an article to be the featured article online.

Montrose Times will not have any paid employees. We will rely completely on volunteers however there is a revenue share plan based on contributed content but considering that no one has found a way to make any money at this you shouldn’t expect it to be much. We do have a few revenue sources for the website based on “pay per clicks” like Google, Priceline.com, Restaurants.com, Gay.com and a few others. Fandango is pending. Telecom Wireless is going to sponsor the print version and more will be needed. We will need a few commission only sales people to help sell ads both on the website and the print version.

Editors and anyone who is willing to do their best to contribute at least one article per week can be provided with their own website and channel.

Any non-profit can have their website hosted for free and will be given their own channel in exchange for regular submission of content.

For-profit businesses can be considered for their own channel and free website as well in exchange for regular submission of content.

Montrose Times has the ability to do live video webcasts.  We tested it out in Las Vegas during New Year's and will be testing it again during Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday in New Orleans.  If you have an event that you would like us to broadcast send us an email.
